Empires of Legacy is the kind of strategy game that colonises your evenings and refuses to give them back. Set across a sprawling alternate history spanning from ancient civilisations to the early modern era, it asks you to build, negotiate, conquer, and endure — and it makes every one of those activities feel consequential.
The core loop is immediately accessible but reveals extraordinary depth over time. City placement, trade route management, diplomatic relationships, and military logistics all interact in ways that create genuinely emergent stories. In one campaign, a trade dispute with a neighbouring republic escalated into a three-way war that reshaped an entire continent. That kind of emergent complexity is the hallmark of great strategy design.
The AI is among the best in the genre. Rival civilisations pursue coherent long-term strategies, respond intelligently to your actions, and form alliances that feel motivated rather than arbitrary. Playing on higher difficulties requires genuine strategic thinking rather than simply outpacing the AI with superior mechanics.
Visually, the game is a treat. The zoomed-out strategic map is beautifully rendered, and the detailed city views reward exploration. The soundtrack — a rotating collection of period-appropriate compositions — is exceptional and does much to reinforce the sense of historical immersion.
The learning curve is steep, and the tutorial, while thorough, can feel overwhelming for newcomers to the genre. A few UI elements also feel cluttered when managing large empires. These are minor complaints in a package of remarkable quality.
Verdict: Empires of Legacy is a landmark strategy title that belongs in the same conversation as the genre's all-time greats. If you have any interest in grand strategy, this is essential.
